The Question:
At the beginning of September, my boss offered me a promotion. It comes with more responsibility and a bit more money. My circle of people thinks this is amazing. But I’m not feeling it. I sort of fell into this job. The first job I got after school was something I was trained for, but it wasn’t what I expected it to be. (Imagine being trained in photography by someone like Annie Leibovitz or Richard Avedon, and ending up doing family portraits in a department store.)
The company closed during COVID. My friend worked for one of the suppliers for this company and told me about an opening, and I got the job. Don’t get me wrong. I will be eternally grateful for this job and the opportunities I got. The problem is that this job never lit me up. So, I want to know if there’s a better path for me out there. Or is the dissatisfaction with this job because I keep looking for something else?
I guess my question is– how can I figure out what kind of career I should be looking into? Or should I focus on the work I’m doing now and plan for my growth in this field? With either choice, I am open to returning to university or other programs to further my education or take on new training.
I have been asking this same question to my family and friends, and they each come up with a different answer. I think their response is more about what they worry about than what they think I should do. I’m hoping that you’ll choose my question and give me an impartial answer.
