An Interview with Miri and Judie
How long have you been reading tarot?
Judie: I’ve been reading tarot for over 40 years at this point. There’s something about the tarot that allows the reader to uncover a problem or belief that the querent isn’t looking at but has been dancing around. The cards can point to it like a witness in a courtroom drama.
Miri: I’ve been reading tarot for over 30 years. I love seeing these simple pieces of paper that can click on the light bulb, just by showing up on a table.
What made you want to start reading tarot in the first place?
Judie: I’ve always been interested in all things esoteric. I watched a James Bond movie with Jane Seymour as a tarot reader and decided that’s what I wanted to do. This was back in the days before the internet and Amazon delivery and Kindle — back when you had to get books from the library or find some hidden New Age bookstore.
Miri: I was in a crystal shop in a tourist trap in Port Jefferson, NY. The cards looked cool, so I begged my parents to buy me a deck. It was love at, well, second sight. It took me a while to actually put in the work to learn the cards, but once I did, they became my life-long companions.
Why do you keep buying decks?
Judie: I always fall in love with the artwork. I look for the Magician card, the High Priestess card, and the Death card. If I can connect to those three, I get the deck. And when it comes to all the decks I own, I can honestly say that when it comes to my collection my most frequently read card is Visa.
Miri: Partly because they’re pretty, and partly because each deck has its own personality and works better with certain kinds of questions. Okay, but mostly because they’re pretty. I really like decks that plug into storytelling and entertainment.
Okay, but how many decks do you have?
Miri: Um, 11 tarot decks? But more keep popping up in bookshelves, so I’m not sure exactly.
Judie: Between tarot, oracle, and Lenormand cards, I have about 100 decks at last count. And the last count was about 4 years ago.
Miri: SEE? I need more decks.
Judie: Just make sure you have the room for them.
Okay. Last question. And this one is super serious. If could choose, would you rather have flight or invisibility?
Miri: Flight. So I could go visit Judie easily.
Judie: Yeah, flight so I wouldn’t be so dependent on Zoom to see Miri.
